Although the way in which those character moments play out is, as I mentioned earlier, fairly formulaic. The best part of the film is the Breakfast Club-esque relationship between our four protagonists, who each have a small character arch as they learn to rely on each other to survive the game. Yes, there is some low-brow comedy, which isn't out of place in a film like this, but it's not overtly offensive. It refuses to go after the truly cheap humor that you'd cringe at in a theater. And that sort of why the film is so much better than it should be. I was thinking it was going to be a pop-culture reference fest, but it wasn't.
